How One Presentation Led to Hospice Volunteering and Changed a Life in Allegany
Retired occupational therapist Marti Tillinger shares how volunteering with HomeCare & Hospice has brought purpose, compassion, and meaningful connections while supporting patients and families.
ALLEGANY - Sometimes all it takes is one conversation to change the course of someone’s life. For Allegany resident Marti Tillinger, that moment came in December 2025 after attending a community presentation about hospice care.
A recently retired occupational therapist with four decades of experience helping others, Tillinger realized she missed the meaningful connections that had always been at the heart of her career.
"The next day, I started the process," she said. "It was a great decision on my part."
Today, Tillinger serves as a volunteer with HomeCare & Hospice, providing companionship and support to patients and families facing life's most difficult journey. One experience in particular confirmed she had found exactly where she was meant to be.
"I've enjoyed providing companionship with a patient, listening to his life experiences, trials and tribulations, hopes and dreams, and sharing instances where our interests have intersected, even some unexpected chuckles," Tillinger said. "He’s a joy to get to know and has been inspiring to me."
For those who may feel hesitant about volunteering, Tillinger says there is a place for nearly everyone.
"Since there are numerous options for volunteers to help, like respite and companionship visits, clerical assistance, or helping with fundraising projects, just anyone can find a niche where they feel comfortable," she said. "Whether someone can volunteer once or twice a year, monthly, or weekly, there's an opportunity to make a difference."
Although Tillinger has volunteered throughout her life, she says hospice has given her an even deeper appreciation for compassion and human connection.
"I feel privileged to have been able to grow and appreciate people and their individual situations with compassion, empathy, and gratitude," she said. "What surprised me most is how much patients and their families truly appreciate the hospice staff, volunteers, and the services offered to help them through such a challenging time. We offer comfort and quality of life during this difficult journey. I'm glad to be part of such a great team and program."
According to Cassie Kelsey, Staff and Outreach Coordinator for HomeCare & Hospice, volunteers like Tillinger are an essential part of the organization's mission.
"Marti has a genuine gift for making people feel seen, heard, and valued," Kelsey said. "She reminds us that hospice volunteering isn't about having all the answers. It's about showing up with kindness, compassion, and a willingness to simply be present. Those moments often mean more than words ever could."
Melissa Sullivan, Chief Executive Officer of HomeCare & Hospice, says volunteers help extend hospice care far beyond clinical services.
"Our volunteers are the heart of hospice," Sullivan said. "Whether they're sitting with a patient, giving a caregiver a much-needed break, helping in our office or supporting community events, they bring comfort, hope and connection when it matters most. We are incredibly grateful for people like Marti who choose to share their time and compassion with others."
HomeCare & Hospice welcomes volunteers of all backgrounds and interests. Opportunities include patient companionship, caregiver respite, bereavement support, office assistance, fundraising events, and other community outreach activities. Comprehensive training is provided, and volunteers can choose a schedule that fits their availability.
