Top Local 5Ks to Run This Spring in Western New York

From scenic trails to meaningful community tributes, these spring races offer something for every pace and purpose.

There’s something about this time of year that makes you want to get outside and move. Maybe it’s the longer days, the fresh air, or the guilt from one too many winter comfort meals. Either way, 5k season is back, and the local race calendar is filling up with events that go far beyond just logging miles.

From scenic trail runs to heartfelt community tributes, these upcoming races each bring their own personality to the starting line. Whether you’re a seasoned runner, a casual walker, or someone who just likes the idea of earning a post-race snack, there’s a race here with your name on it!

SASQUATCH STOMP 5K

May 3 | HoliMont

If the idea of pounding pavement sounds a little too traditional for you, the Sasquatch Stomp 5k Trail Run offers a refreshing alternative. This race trades sidewalks for singletrack, sending participants into the woods for a run that feels more like an adventure than a competition.

Taking place on the slopes of HoliMont Ski Resort, the terrain keeps things interesting - think winding trails, uneven footing, and just enough unpredictability to keep you on your toes. It’s the kind of race where your time might matter a little less than your ability to stay upright and enjoy the thrill. And yes, the Sasquatch theme is fully embraced. Don’t be surprised if you spot a few costumes riding up the chairlift to the start line, or runners leaning into the playful, slightly mysterious vibe. Rumor has it the legendary TrailSquatch calls these woods home, so keep an eye out for oversized footprints, or maybe even a furry cheerleader cheering you on along the course.

What really sets this one apart is the atmosphere. Trail runs tend to attract a different kind of energy - less intense, more laid-back, and full of people who are just happy to be outside. It’s equal parts race and nature escape, with a finish line at the base of the ski hill that feels well-earned in more ways than one. If you’ve never tried a trail run before, this might be the perfect place to start.

Beyond the race itself, the Sasquatch Stomp is really set up as a full day outside. There’s something for everyone - from a kids race to the main 5k, with both individual and team categories - so you can make it as competitive (or as casual) as you want. Spectators are just as welcome, with plenty of space to cheer, wander, and soak in the trail atmosphere. All racers are treated to a post-race party complete with tacos (always a strong motivator), and 5k participants score a Sasquatch Stomp t-shirt to remember the day. Proceeds support the ongoing work of the EVGV Trail, adding another feel-good layer to the whole experience. Sign up at www.runreg.com/sasquatch-stomp-5k-trail-run.

HAPPHY HALF 5K & BEER MILE

May 9 | Holiday Valley

For those who prefer their miles on the road, but with a whole lot of personality, the Happy Half & 5k is a full-on celebration. Think bright colors, big smiles, costumes, and a course designed to keep things light, upbeat, and just plain fun from start to finish.

Yes, there’s a half-marathon. Yes, there’s a 5k. But this event leans hard into the idea that running should be enjoyable, not intimidating. Expect surprises along the course that will catch you off guard in the best way - surprises that will make you laugh, loosen up, and maybe forget you’re even “racing.” It’s the kind of event where tutus, unicorn vibes, and colorful outfits feel right at home, and where the crowd energy carries you just as much as your legs do.

And the perks don’t stop at the finish line. Runners are rewarded with collectible finisher medals, super soft race shirts (always a crowd favorite), chip timing for those tracking their pace, and a well-earned recovery snack bag. The course is certified, supported, and safe… but the overall vibe? Pure fun! Whether you’re chasing a PR or just showing up for a good time, this is one event where enjoyment is part of the race plan.

Then there’s the Southern Tier Brew Mile - because why not add a little twist to the mix? Sponsored by Southern Tier Brewing Company, this crowd-favorite challenge blends running with a bit of… hydration. The concept is simple (in theory): Participants complete laps of a short course, stopping to drink a beer between each lap. You can tackle it solo if you’re feeling ambitious, or grab a teammate and divide the fun. It’s equal parts competition and comedy, with plenty of laughs from both participants and spectators. Even if you’re not racing the Beer Mile, it’s worth sticking around to watch. It might just be the most entertaining mile you’ll ever see! CINDY MOHR 5K

June 6 | Veteran’s Memorial Park, Salamanca

Some races stick with you a little longer, and the Cindy Mohr 5K is one of them. Rooted in community and remembrance, this event honors the life and legacy of Cindy Mohr, a respected educator in the Salamanca Central School District for 36 years who made a lasting impact on generations of students.

Known for her dedication, kindness, and ability to connect with young people, Cindy was the kind of person who showed up for others, day in and day out. After her passing, a scholarship was created in her name to continue that spirit of support, helping local students pursue their goals and futures.

The race itself reflects that same sense of purpose. It’s not just about crossing the finish line - it’s about coming together as a community to remember someone who meant so much to so many. You’ll see former students, colleagues, families, and friends all taking part, each with their own reason for being there.

For those looking to take part, the race will start and finish at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Salamanca. Check-in runs from 9:00-9:45am with a 10:00am start that brings everyone together at the line - whether you’re running competitively or walking in support. Registration is $35 for ages 13 and up and $25 for younger participants, making it an accessible event for families as well. T-shirts are available for those who sign up, and participants can also choose to make an additional donation to the Cynthia Mohr Scholarship Fund during registration. Proceeds benefit both the Salamanca High School Class of 2027 and the scholarship fund, continuing Cindy’s impact in a very real way. It’s a well-organized, community-driven event - one that blends small-town warmth with a meaningful cause, and a reminder that sometimes the most memorable races are the ones closest to home.

ELISA’S RUN FOR THE ARTS

June 13 | Virtual and In-Person

If there’s one event on this list that perfectly blends movement with meaning, it’s Elisa’s Run for the Arts. Now marking ten years since the passing of Elisa Hughey from cancer, this annual 5k continues to celebrate a life defined by creativity, quiet strength, and a deep love for the arts.

Elisa wasn’t someone who sought the spotlight, but her impact has continued to shine through the scholarship created in her memory. Since 2017, the Elisa B. Hughey Scholarship for the Arts has supported students and community projects in Ellicottville and across Cattaraugus County, funding everything from individual scholarships to local art programs and creative initiatives.

The run itself is intentionally flexible, making it one of the most accessible events around. Participants can gather in person locally for a group run with the Hughey family, or take part virtually from wherever they are - running, walking, biking, or simply getting outside and moving in their own way. It’s less about competition and more about participation, reflection, and connection.

“As always, we are deeply grateful for you - our incredible community of friends and family - who continue to help us keep Elisa Hughey’s artistic spirit alive through the Elisa B. Hughey Scholarship for the Arts,” said Brenda Hughey, Elisa’s sister. “Elisa was never one for the limelight, but we believe she would be proud of the good that has been accomplished in her memory.”

Since 2017, Elisa’s Run for the Arts and the Elisa B. Hughey Scholarship Fund have awarded over $14,000 in art scholarships to 17 students across Cattaraugus County, NY. In addition, $7,000 in grants has been applied towards school and community art projects, art classes, and local artists.

For virtual participants, feel free to share a photo of your run on the event’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/Elisasrun) or email it to hugheyb1@gmail.com to be part of the collective experience. And for anyone who wants to support the mission beyond race day, contributions to the scholarship fund are always welcome at http://bit.ly/elisa-hughey-fund-for-the-arts.
