Autumn Equinox Astrology: Embracing Change, Healing and New Beginnings

Autumn Equinox Astrology: Embracing Change, Healing and New Beginnings

Suzy Woo explores the astrological energy surrounding the autumn equinox, from relationship changes and healing to new opportunities and what the season may bring for each zodiac sign.

We’re heading for the autumnal equinox taking place Tuesday night, September 22. This marks the point the sun is in its “fall” position as it crosses the zero point of Libra, the Venus-ruled sign of relationships of all kinds. On the new moon of September 10, Venus entered Scorpio, Mercury entered Libra, and Uranus retrograded in Gemini.

With Venus in a Mars-ruled sign, and Mercury the messenger in a Venus-ruled sign, while Mars is in Cancer ruled by the moon, you can bet emotions are running high, pains are running deep, and many relationships are severing - be it through conscious choice or people passing away. We seek to understand why things go the way they do and why people make the choices they make. Everyone is the way they are for a lifetime’s collection of reasons. We don’t need to agree, but every human has a right to life, a right to exist, and the right to choose their own path. For many, it is a time of loss and a time for deep healing.

The equinox creates the backdrop for the season. There may be opportunities to renegotiate or reconnect, burying the hatchet or trying again, if the heart suggests something is worth salvaging. The world will continue to spin regardless; it may be a time to accept our defeats or cut our losses and move on, to discover life anew. With the moon in detached Aquarius, it will be easier to use logic to weight the pros and cons of choices and projected outcomes. It is a time to cut apron strings and find our tribe.

There could be strong opportunities for increased income, strong returns, and re-evaluating our own values, reconsidering what is valuable to us, and adjustments may be called for. There is no harm in growth. The sad part about growth is oftentimes those around us are not growing with us, and we outgrow certain relationships, friendship, jobs, careers, and places of living. It is time to keep on stepping. You will have new situations that are aligned with the direction you are growing towards - keep your faith.

Three days later we have the full moon in Aries on the 26, connecting with retrograding Neptune. Wow, will this be an eye-opener! Here is where we can feel confident in what has taken place and we can begin to truly integrate the changes. Chiron will have retrograded back into Aries, which brings up our rejection wounds. What an opportune time for a change of scenery, new connections, networking, and deep level healing, which can include therapy work, shadow work, and healing of generational traumas.

With the planet of love, money, and relationships, Venus now transiting through Scorpio is likely to bring up topics of abuses, power struggles, and control dramas. This full moon in independent Aries is a great time for a new start, seeing the world with fresh eyes and a purified heart. Here is how it may play out for you. Check your rising sign if known, then your sun sign.

ARIES / ARIES RISING: Your ruling planet, Mars, still has you on emotional overdrive through the 27, but then the full moon is in your sign, leading to the peak of the crescendo. Don’t push yourself to the point of exhaustion. Put yourself in other parties’ shoes for any hostile encounters this month and see if you still would have done things that way.

TAURUS / TAURUS RISING: Your ruling planet, Venus, has gone into the depths of Scorpio. This can bring up uncomfortable, sensitive and/or painful or traumatic topics or memories. Remember everything happens for a reason; try to align with your growth potential. What did this help you to realize? How can you grow from this? Don’t be afraid to seek help.

GEMINI / GEMINI RISING: Your ruling planet, Mercury, is with the sun in the sign of relationships, Libra. This is a phenomenal time to network, to share your talents, to post what you are looking for, to do presentations, and have wonderful conversations. The equinox and full moon are highly supportive of showing you new opportunities - pay attention. The pivot of Uranus in your sign may have shifted something quickly in your favor when you can see the bigger picture.

CANCER / CANCER RISING: With Mars in your sign squaring Saturn in Aries, you are wound tightly both mentally and emotionally. You can be impulsive or reactive and feel out of character. If foundations aren’t strong in a particular area of life, it can come crashing down. Exercise, swim, get moving to burn off excess anger. Practice the pause. Feel your feelings and express them safely. You’ll feel better after the full moon.

LEO / LEO RISING: Notice what takes place around the equinox, including a day on either side. The Aquarius moon is with the lunar north node, shining a bright light in the direction you must travel for healing and growth. With Jupiter in your sign for a year, you have opportunities abound to build from. Within days, Mars will be moving into your sign and this will super-boost your energy, luck, your reach, and your spirits.

VIRGO / VIRGO RISING: Up until the equinox you’ve had the sun giving you nice ground beneath your feet while feeling deeper level ambitions, motivations, rehashed or new ideas percolating. When we enter Libra season with the equinox, you may feel a little ungrounded or out of sorts. Use this time to gather your thoughts and study what type of people you want to be connected with. Stay open for talk and negotiations.

LIBRA / LIBRA RISING: Your favorite time of year is here, with beautiful autumn colors, cool temperatures, and social gatherings for warm pumpkin spice and apple crisp. Equinox and the full moon are wonderfully supportive for you to break out of a mold and be able to make new acquaintances. It’s not for breathing new life into relationships you’ve outgrown, or the effort will lead to disappointment. The full moon will light up the right direction for you. With your ruling planet in Scorpio, you are having deep reflections now and have ample space for healing of all kinds.

SCORPIO / SCORPIO RISING: With your ruling planet Mars in fellow water sign Cancer, your X-ray vision has been amplified, your emotions running even deeper, and it may have prompted some tears over what may have been. You’ll be getting more energy and stronger connections with friends after the 27. Things are clearing out to create an open path for you to support the next leg of your journey.

SAGITTARIUS / SAGITTARIUS RISING: Sudden changes jerking you around caused disruptions but never stops your ability to laugh and support others. The equinox and full moon are boosting your energy and supporting you. This is a great time for socializing, party planning, and networking. After the 27, you’ll have lots more available energy to get back in the swing of things. Be sure to take the time to listen to others, not only do the talking.

CAPRICORN / CAPRICORN RISING: With Mars in Cancer and Saturn in Aries, you’re under pressure, which may have been just what you needed to advance. The pressure comes off after the 27, but with the equinox there are no planets in fellow earth signs. This means hold steady and don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Your ruling planet, Saturn, wants you to shine with your impeccable work ethic while building a team. You need a backup person or plan - you’re not infallible.

AQUARIUS / AQUARIUS RISING: You’re walking cleanly into autumn with great ideas and concepts, ready to connect with others like you, who will be showing up in your life more readily now. Get out and socialize, especially after the 27; you’ll have lots more energy to work with. The full Aries moon can bring conflict; keep your cool and win over the opposition with your ability to speak to others at their level even though you don’t like to. Apply patience.

PISCES / PISCES RISING: Mars in a water sign has you wound up; it can be ambition or can have you swimming in deep emotions, particular of the past and/or regarding family matters. Use the energy to spring you ahead in your endeavors. The full moon is with Neptune, helping you to see the bright side of things. Let that inspire you to keep creating - it’s what you do best!
