Past Forward: Tracking Icons and Legends on the McKean County Museum Trail

Sometimes the best adventures are found by looking back. In the Allegheny National Forest (ANF) Region, history is a living experience found in the valleys of the Pennsylvania Wilds. This "detour destination" invites you to discover the people and places that shaped a nation.

The McKean County Museum Trail features seven museums celebrating a legacy of oil, logging, manufacturing, innovation, and art. Pick up a Museum Trail Passport to collect stamps and "Ignite Your Path" toward prizes from the Trail Central Prize Vault.

The Icons of Bradford: A Trio of Innovation

The journey through time often centers in Bradford, a city that has left an indelible mark on American industry and culture. The most famous stop is the Zippo/Case Museum & Flagship Store. An international icon, it is marked by a 40-foot flickering Zippo lighter at the entrance. Celebrating windproof lighters and Case knives, the museum showcases the "lifetime guarantee" and craftsmanship that define these global brands.

Continuing the story of local grit, the Penn Brad Oil Museum retraces the history of the Bradford Oil Field - the world’s first billion-dollar oil field. It highlights the rugged pioneers who utilized the "black gold" that once pumped through thousands of derricks in these very hills.

Rounding out the Bradford trio is the Marilyn Horne Museum & Exhibit Center. Dedicated to the world-renowned opera star and Bradford native, this space houses costumes and artifacts from her legendary career, proving that world-class voices often have small-town roots.

Forging a Nation and Saving a Species

In Eldred, you’ll find the Eldred WWII Museum. This internationally recognized facility provides a moving look at the global conflict with 15,000 square feet of artifacts and immersive exhibits. It is a mandatory stop for any student of history.

In Smethport, the McKean County Historical Museum at the Old County Jail offers a visceral connection to the past. Housed in a fortress-like jail built in 1875, visitors can explore local artifacts and peer into old dungeon cells.

Further south in Kane, the McCleery Wolf Center and Kane Historic Preservation Society (located at the historic depot) bridge the gap between our railway past and the natural world. Learn about Dr. Edward McCleery’s efforts to save the lobo wolf from extinction, ensuring their howl remained a part of the American wilderness.

The Heart of the Gorge: Kinzua Bridge Visitor Center

Finally, no trip is complete without a stop at Kinzua Bridge State Park. While the famous Skywalk reopens for foot traffic September 1 - October 31, 2026, the Visitor Center is a destination in its own right.

Open daily from 8:00am-6:00pm, the center features interactive exhibits on the 1882 viaduct - the "Eighth Wonder of the World". It offers a striking look at how nature and industry have collided in the gorge for over a century.
