It’s Just a Phase: How the Moon Influences Emotions, Energy, and Intentions
From planting intentions at the new moon to releasing at the full moon, Suzy Woo explores the emotional and energetic influence of lunar cycles.
The ancients understood that our universe and everything in it operates in cycles. Over thousands of years of studies, the best times to do particular things such as planting, have been established. Every 29.5 days, our moon makes one journey through all 12 zodiac signs, going through each constellation for approximately 2.5 days.
The moon has an impact on our emotional body, our subconscious. It causes tides to rise; and since we are mostly water, our tides rise too! A lunar month begins with a new moon. We don’t see it in the sky, because it’s too close to the sun. This is the time to set new intentions. We are more clear-minded and not emotionally-driven. The moon rules over the sign Cancer. Cancer is the most emotional of all the zodiac signs.
The full moon is when the sun and moon are in opposite signs in the sky, and represents illumination. The big, bright moon lights up the night as well as what is in our subconscious that needs our attention. “Luna” is the Roman name for our moon, and is the root word in “lunacy” and “lunatic.” This came from extreme behaviors which occur when the moon is full and our tides rise. This is evidenced by public services such as emergency rooms, school teachers, and prison guards. More incidents happen, behaviors can swing wildly and emotions run high.
When we are nearing a full moon, many report difficulty falling and staying asleep. It is a time to allow embedded, buried thoughts to surface and address any issues, so they don’t linger into the next month (moonth). In summary, new moons are for new intentions, full moons are release and letting go.
We use the sign of each moon to help us know how to work with them. Fire moons (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) can combust if impatient, can fire up passion, ignite, initiate, be feisty or spontaneous. Earth moons (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) are about financials, possessions, tangible property, about staying the course and careful planning. Air moons (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) are about meetings and meeting people, connecting, chatting, socializing, broadcasting, brainstorming, talking things out and involve relationships of all kinds. Water moons (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) are very emotional, quiet, going inwards, stillness, meditational, and sometimes can trigger depression, withdrawal or issues with addictions.
