Beloved Ellicottville resident Kathleen M. “Kate” Hughey will be celebrated for her years of service in local restaurants, her community involvement, and her unwavering team spirit.
ELLICOTTVILLE - Kathleen M. "Kate" Hughey, 62, of Ellicottville, passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2025 at Buffalo General Hospital after a long battle with cancer. She was born on December 2, 1962 in Salamanca, daughter of the late Richard and Genevieve (Schumacher) O'Brien. On July 2, 2005 she married James G. Hughey Sr., who predeceased her on May 2, 2022.
For years, Kate served and waitressed at different area restaurants in Ellicottville, and lastly at Monroe St. Brick and Brew. She was a member of the Holy Name of Mary RC Church in Ellicottville, as well as the Ellicottville American Legion and its Auxiliary. She will also be remembered as a lifelong devoted and passionate Buffalo Bills fan.
Kate is survived by a step-son, James (Kristin) Hughey Jr. of Ellicottville, and three step-daughters, Brenda Hughey of Tucson, AZ, Sarah (Jeff Jamieson) Linsler of Fredonia, and Laura (Christopher) Heintz of New York City, NY. Also surviving are three brothers, Thomas (Becky) O'Brien of Springville, Robert (Margaret) O'Brien of Florida, and Timothy (Cheryl) O'Brien of Franklinville, and two brother-in-laws, Dick Swift of North Tonawanda and John Warner of Jamestown. Also surviving are eight step-grandchildren, Connor and Zachary Hughey, Adrian and Ignacio de Orbe, Sullivan Linsler, and Ryan, Soren, and Vera Heintz, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, Kate is predeceased by a step-daughter, Elisa (Hughey) de Orbe, and two sisters, Sharon Swift and Donna Warner, and a brother, Michael O’Brien.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025 from 4:00-6:00pm at the Ellicottville American Legion. Memorials may be made to the Ellicottville/Great Valley Ambulance Service.
