Playback Theatre of Buffalo to Perform Live at Art’s Cafe in Springville

Springville Center for the Arts welcomes Playback Theatre of Buffalo for an interactive evening where audience stories come to life on stage.

SPRINGVILLE - Springville Center for the Arts presents Playback Theatre of Buffalo, an improvisation group that has performed in Western New York and beyond since 1997. Playback is a form of theatre in which members of the audience share stories from their own lives, and the actors play them back as truthfully as possible. They will be hosting a show at Art’s Cafe on Friday, May 8th at 7:00pm.

The founding members of Playback include Anna Kay France (Artistic Director), Joy Scime (Managing Director), and Susan Sorensen, a Springville native, with supporting members Kilissa Cissoko and Aurelie Damperon. They have performed for schools, churches, retreats, community centers, and at celebrations like birthdays, anniversaries, and memorial services. Previous audiences have included Hospice, Stella Niagara Respite Retreats, The Alzheimer’s Association of WNY, and VOICE/Buffalo.

The idea of Playback Theatre is to transform stories by audience participants through imaginative retelling. They use sounds, words, movement, multicolored cloths, and music. The results may be funny, poignant, moving, illuminating, or healing. One of the stark differences between Playback and other forms of improvisation is that they never use audience contributions as the springboard for their own imaginative improvisations. Their focus is always to listen carefully and recapture the heart of the teller’s story.

Playback Theatre of Buffalo will be performing at Art’s Cafe, located at 5 E Main Street, Springville, NY on Friday, May 8th from 7:00-8:00pm. Donations are encouraged to help Springville Center for the Arts fund future programming. For more information on this event, visit SpringvilleArts.org or call 716-592-9038. Springville Center for the Arts is a nonprofit multi-arts center with theater, concert, gallery and workshop programs.
