Southern Tier Quilt Guild Donates Handmade Quilts to HomeCare & Hospice

Local quilting group continues decades-long tradition of providing warmth, compassion, and support to patients and families in need.

ALLEGANY - HomeCare & Hospice is proud to recognize the Southern Tier Quilt Guild for their ongoing generosity and dedication to support hospice patients with new quilts throughout the communities they serve.

What began as a quilting group meeting regularly in the mid-1970s, has grown into a group of 30 members that make 120-130 handmade quilts annually, distributing them to a variety of organizations in the community. Each quilt taking 40 hours to make.

“Many guild members have experienced loss of a loved one and the guild hopes this provides love, warmth, comfort, and hope that the recipient knows that someone cares about them,” said Dominique Switzer, Vice President of the guild. “All quilts donated have a tag sewn into them that reads, ‘Made with Love by the Southern Tier Quilt Guild.’”

“We are always so appreciative of the quilts we receive for our patients,” said Melissa Sullivan, Chief Executive Officer for HomeCare & Hospice. “The guild’s compassion and dedication bring so much comfort to our patients and their families.”

In addition to HomeCare & Hospice, the guild donates quilts to the Salvation Army, Social Services, Adult Protective and Child Protective Services, Olean General Hospital, Total Senior Care, and the Genesis House. They make and donate Christmas stockings, wheelchair walker bags, and grocery bags as well.

Anyone can join the Southern Tier Quilt Guild regardless of previous sewing experience. Any cotton fabric donations and sewing supplies are accepted as well as monetary donations for purchase of supplies. Monthly meetings are held at Creekside Chapel in Allegany every third Tuesday of the month, September through June, gathering at 5:30pm for fellowship with the meeting at 6:00pm.

HomeCare & Hospice (HCH) helps maintain independence at home with compassion in communities throughout Allegany, Cattaraugus, Genesee, and Wyoming counties. For more information, please call 716-372-2106 or visit homecare-hospice.org.
