Earth Day & Arbor Day 2026 Events in Western New York: Volunteer, Learn & Celebrate

A series of Earth Day and Arbor Day events across the region invites residents to celebrate nature through culture, education, and hands-on community involvement.

As spring settles into the region, a lineup of Earth Day and Arbor Day events is giving residents meaningful ways to celebrate the season, deepen their connection to the environment, and take part in community-focused activities. From cultural experiences and educational discussions to hands-on volunteer efforts, there’s something for everyone looking to get involved.

Kicking things off, the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum, 82 W. Hetzel St. in Salamanca, will host Earth Day Festivities on Wednesday, April 22 from 10:00am-3:00pm. This free, public event invites visitors to spend the day immersed in cultural traditions and environmental awareness. Activities include outdoor cooking demonstrations, tobacco planting, and opportunities to learn traditional songs tied to planting and the land. Attendees will also gain insight into the important work being done by the Seneca Nation’s Environmental Protection Department, particularly its efforts to protect and preserve local waterways for future generations. The event offers a unique blend of culture, education, and environmental stewardship in a welcoming, family-friendly setting.

On Friday, April 24 at 11:00am, the Nannen Arboretum Society will host its annual Arbor Day Celebration at the Ellicottville Town Center. This gathering not only marks the importance of trees and green spaces in the community but also brings together members and supporters for the organization’s annual meeting. Highlights include a brief look back at the history of the Arboretum’s Herb Garden, followed by the ceremonial planting of the 2026 Arbor Day Tree - a Ginkgo Biloba, known for its resilience and striking golden foliage in the fall. The event serves as a reminder of the long-term impact of conservation efforts and the simple act of planting for future generations.

The weekend continues on Saturday, April 25 beginning with the Arboretum’s Annual Clean-Up Day from 9:00am-noon. Volunteers are encouraged to bring rakes and gloves and lend a hand in preparing the grounds for the busy spring and summer seasons. It’s a great opportunity for community members to come together, enjoy the outdoors, and take pride in maintaining one of Ellicottville’s most treasured natural spaces. Email info@nannenarboretum.com for additional details and other volunteer opportunities.

Later that day, attention turns to Olean, where the Olean Meditation Center will host an Earth Day 2026 presentation. Doors open at 11:00am with time to connect with local partners before the featured presentation by Dr. Michael Hoffmann at 11:45am. Hoffmann, lead author of Our Changing Menu: Climate Change and the Foods We Love and Need, will explore how climate change is already impacting the foods we grow, eat, and rely on. The interactive presentation will highlight the powerful role food plays in the climate conversation, while also offering practical insights into how individuals and communities can be part of the solution. The event wraps up with an optional circle discussion, giving attendees the chance to dive deeper into the topic in a more conversational setting. Light refreshments will be served, and while the event is free and open to all, pre-registration is encouraged. The Olean Meditation Center is located at 2275 Dugan Rd. For more info and to register, go to oleanmeditation.org.

Together, these events highlight the many ways our community can celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day. Whether attending a presentation, planting a tree, or simply lending a hand, each event offers a chance to engage with the environment in a way that feels both personal and impactful.
