Elisa’s Run For the Arts
Elisa’s Run For the Arts
5K Tribute to a Beloved Community Member Set to Take Place June 14
Every June, the communities of Ellicottville and West Valley come together in a special way to remember and honor someone who left an indelible mark on their hearts. Elisa Hughey was a beloved local artist and avid runner who lost her battle with cancer in 2016. Since then, the Elisa B. Hughey Fund For the Arts has awarded scholarships annually to college-bound students committed to advancing their skills in various aspects of the arts. And in June, many will run (or walk) to remember Elisa and to raise money for her namesake’s scholarship fund.
The annual “Elisa’s Run For the Arts” is more than a 5K; it’s a heartfelt celebration of Elisa’s life, passions, and contributions to the community she loved. The best part: anyone can participate! This “fun run” is a virtual format event, which means anyone near and far can celebrate the life of Elisa and her passion for creativity.
“We love the virtual format so our friends from all over can participate,” said Brenda Hughey, Elisa’s sister and member of the Elisa B. Hughey Scholarship Committee. “We’re grateful for all of your continued support. It’s incredible how our fund has grown to nearly $50,000… all because of your generosity!”
Supporters from anywhere in the world can complete a 5K (3.1 miles) on their own - in a neighborhood park, on a treadmill, or along their favorite trail. It’s the perfect opportunity to reflect, connect, and celebrate the power of art, movement, and community. All are welcome - whether you're a competitive runner, a casual walker, or someone who simply wants to show support and remember Elisa. Participants are encouraged to make a donation online prior to their run, then snap a photo during or after their run and upload it to Facebook, tagging Elisa B. Hughey Scholarship For the Arts. Share your tribute and be part of the celebration, no matter where you are!
All donations will go directly into the Elisa B. Hughey Scholarship Fund. These funds help students take their first steps toward careers in the creative arts - continuing Elisa’s mission to encourage and uplift artistic talent.
“We have expanded the scope to include Performing Arts as well as Visual Arts,” said Brenda. “This year, we further decided to open the scholarship to all schools in Cattaraugus County, NY! In the past, we only offered to West Valley and Ellicottville schools. For 2026 and going forward, we will allow our recipients to reapply each year of college as long as they continue to study art. We are pleased to be able to reach more art students and support them further in their education.”
Donations to the Elisa B. Hughey Fund for the Arts can be made via a secure link at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation, where the fund is housed. Go to cattfoundation.org and search the fund by name.
Over the years, this run has grown from a small, local gathering into a wider movement of remembrance, celebration, and inspiration. Families, friends, former classmates, teachers, and total strangers have come together year after year, united by a shared respect for Elisa’s memory and a common goal to support the arts. The event is not only a way to remember someone who gave so much to her community, but also a way to ensure her passion continues to make a difference. Watch for this year’s scholarship winners to be announced later in June.
