Ellicottville Central School Releases Proposed 2026–2027 Budget Ahead of May Vote

District outlines rising costs, modest state aid increases, and continued commitment to student programs ahead of public hearing and vote

As planning begins for the upcoming school year, Ellicottville Central School District has released an overview of its proposed 2026–2027 budget, outlining both the challenges and priorities ahead.

The proposed budget totals $16,889,130, representing an approximate 3.6% increase from the current year. District officials say the increase is largely driven by rising operational expenses, including transportation, utilities, health insurance, contractual obligations, and the ongoing cost of maintaining high-quality programs and opportunities for students.

To remain fiscally responsible, the district plans to stay within the state’s tax cap, proposing a 1.5% increase. Despite this, state aid is expected to rise by only about 1%, or roughly $32,000 - an amount that falls short of offsetting the growing costs of running the district. As a result, local funding continues to play a significant role in sustaining programs and services.

New York State determines school aid through a formula that considers property wealth, student need, and local capacity. Because Ellicottville has relatively higher property values and lower overall student need compared to other districts, it receives approximately 32% of its funding from the state - significantly less than many neighboring districts, which may receive between 60% and 90%. This funding structure means the district must rely more heavily on local taxpayers and approach budgeting with careful consideration. District leaders emphasize that, even with these constraints, their focus remains firmly on supporting students.

Throughout the budget development process, administrators reviewed all areas of spending to balance fiscal responsibility with the needs of students and families. Priorities include preserving strong academic programs, maintaining extra-curricular opportunities, and ensuring responsible long-term financial planning.

By slightly exceeding the tax cap, the district aims to maintain high-quality instructional programs, support student services and extracurricular activities, address increasing operational and transportation costs, and continue providing a safe and engaging learning environment. District officials acknowledge the impact on taxpayers and stress their commitment to transparency and thoughtful financial planning.

Community members are encouraged to stay informed and take part in the budget process. A public budget hearing will be held on Tuesday, May 12 at 6:00pm in the High School Library. Voting will take place on Tuesday, May 19 from 12:00- 8:00pm in the Elementary Foyer.

District leaders say that, while challenges remain, the goal is clear: to invest in students while maintaining the excellence and sustainability of Ellicottville Central School.“Together, we can continue to provide exceptional opportunities for our studentsand ensure that Ellicottville Central School District remains a place where all learners thrive,” the district shared in its message to the community. Residents are encourage to participate in the process and help shape the future of local education.
