Pinewood Derby Rolls Back into Madigan’s November 23 for Racing, Fun, and Community Giving

The Pinewood Derby returns to Madigan’s on November 23 with new build nights, creative racing divisions, and all proceeds benefiting the Bob McCarthy Foundation.

ELLICOTTVILLE - The track is getting polished, race kits are being carved, and excitement is building across town. On Sunday, November 23rd, the (Behind The) Pinewood Derby returns to Madigan’s for year #2, bringing back the nostalgia, creativity, and friendly competition that made this event a local favorite in its inaugural year. The race is open to all ages and skill levels, with proceeds supporting The Bob McCarthy Foundation.

Event Schedule for Sunday, November 23rd at Madigan’s (Upstairs)

  • Pits open: 11:00am

  • Registration: 12:00pm

  • Racing begins: 1pm

  • Registration: 20 per car

Participants will race traditional pinewood derby-style cars built from standard kits. Each car will be weighed and measured upon entry to ensure it meets the dimension and weight rules before hitting the track. Divisions will include Kid, Adult, Bar/Restaurant, and Shop, making plenty of room for creative rivalries and bragging rights. Trophies and special prizes donated through Brooks LeFeber Auctions will be awarded to winners. Additional fundraising efforts will include a 50/50 raffle and auction items from local businesses.

NEW THIS YEAR: COMMUNITY BUILD NIGHT

To help racers prepare, a Community Build Night will be held at the Ellicottville Memorial Library on Wednesday, November 19th from 6:00-8:00pm. Pinewood legends Brooks LeFeber, Jeremy Knab, and other seasoned derby veterans will be on hand with tips, guidance, and plenty of stories from derbies past.

Participants can get hands-on help with: weight and balance, measurements and shaping, decoration and paint ideas, and general troubleshooting. Kits are available online or at Madigan’s, and newcomers are highly encouraged to attend the build session - especially those who want to ensure their car flies down the track and passes inspection.

A TRADITION ROOTED IN COMMUNITY SPIRIT

First introduced in 1953, pinewood derbies have long been known for blending craftsmanship, family bonding, and just the right amount of competitive thrill. Here in Ellicottville, the tradition has grown hand-in-hand with community support.

Proceeds from the derby help fuel the Foundation’s charitable efforts, including this year’s support for the Ellicottville Playground Project, which aims to bring new, modern play equipment to local families. Following the derby, the Foundation shifts into another beloved seasonal favorite - The Annual Irish Christmas, taking place December 5th at Ellicottville Brewing Company.

Whether you’re a first-time builder, a veteran speed-shaper, or just here for the excitement, the (Behind The) Pinewood Derby is ready to roll. Come build, come race, come cheer - and help support a mission rooted in giving back. See you in the pits… and on the track!
