Sky Woman Presentation at Ellicottville Memorial Library Showcases Indigenous Storytelling & Public Art

A unique presentation at the Ellicottville Memorial Library will bring the story of Sky Woman to life through a traveling mural and cultural storytelling experience.

The Ellicottville Memorial Library has been home to a moveable mural for the past few months. Come join Ana Stahlman on Tuesday, April 7th at 2:00pm to see the mural and to hear the story behind the mural. It retells how North America, or turtle island, came to be and how it was populated by a woman who fell out of the sky world and how all the animals came to help her survive before there was earth. Turtle provided her back for the human to rest but in the end, it was little muskrat, who dove down deep to the bottom of the water and came up with a paw of earth which allowed Sky Woman to create North America.

This movable mural was sponsored by New York State Council on the Arts CHARM initiative partnering with Southern Tier West Regional Planning and Development Board to bring public art to engage rural communities. Along with murals done in Chautauqua and Allegheny counties, 2 organizations in Cattaraugus County were chosen. Seneca Salamanca Chamber of Commerce was one of the partners. They organized this movable mural along with two on site murals in Salamanca's main street in front of the Antique Mall.
