Decker Tree Greenhouse Opens in Great Valley with Flowers, Gifts, Produce, and More

The owners of Decker Tree Services are bringing new life to a longtime greenhouse location with flowers, gifts, local products, and plans for future expansion.

A new offering from the husband-and-wife team behind Decker Tree Services, Decker Tree Greenhouse opened last month in Great Valley. With a combined over thirty years of experience in tree trimming and stump grinding across Cattaraugus, Allegany, and southern Erie counties, Decker Tree will now offer services of a softer kind: floral arrangements, hanging baskets, herbs, produce, and more to come from its on-site greenhouse. EllicottvilleNOW caught up with co-owner Kayla Decker to discuss.

“We started not even a month ago,” Kayla said in a recent phone interview. “My husband moved from Olean to Great Valley, and we are about five minutes from home now, which is really convenient and really nice.” After relocating to Great Valley, Kayla said that the recently wed couple found an old greenhouse and decided to move the business there.

“We found this greenhouse next to the shop, and were like, what a great opportunity!” she said. “It had been sitting empty for a really long time; I remember coming in when I was a kid with my mom, so there is a little bit of a nostalgic feeling here.”

Kayla said that the couple moved to the location last October during the tumultuous weather. “We were working on getting the greenhouse cleared out - doing all that kind of stuff - and decided to do the flowers and see what happens, so this is kind of like our trial year,” she said.

Kayla explained that the couple opted to skip the grand opening celebration and just do one quietly. “We wanted to do a soft opening and have that surprise factor of it,” she said. “We have different things to look at; we are not the greenhouse that you are used to, and that is kind of the point with our decorations, succulent arrangements, and old antiques, and gifts - not just flowers for the garden, but something you can actually bring inside and keep the whole entire year,” she said.

In addition to florals, gifts, and antiques, Decker Tree Greenhouse will also offer baked goods like fresh breads, bagels, cookies, and more, provided by the secretary for Decker Tree who is also a local baker, and free-range eggs, courtesy of Kayla’s mother’s chickens. “They are the most spoiled chickens I have ever seen!” she added.

As for what the future holds, Kayla says that they will be growing flowers for next year as well as expanding their floral arrangement offerings. “I have somebody right now that I am preparing hanging baskets for at the end of July for them to rent out, so we are going to try to dabble in that as well and see how that works.” Additional offerings like ferns and floral arrangements will come soon, but Kayla says they will hold off on the cut flowers at the moment. “We are going to be putting big gardens in the back, offering dry flowers, U-pick… stuff like that as well, and in the fall, we’re going to do pumpkins, mums, corn - all those fun fall things,” she said, adding that dried flower classes may also be an option in the future.

When asked where the inspiration comes from, Kayla said that her mother and grandmother were very avid gardeners. “I grew up coming into the greenhouse here, so this is very close to my parents. I am still learning, however, and I love learning all the personalities of the different flowers, every day, even morning to night. It has been a really cool thing to be around it all day long versus doing your gardening at home. And who doesn’t like playing with flowers?”

In one month of opening, Decker Tree Greenhouse has already left an impression with the locals. “We are just super excited for the community, and everybody seems very excited about it,” she added. “We will be doing fresh produce once the harvest season comes around, but there are lots of ideas and we are really excited to get everything out there for everybody.”

Decker Tree Greenhouse is located at 4795 Route 219 in Great Valley. The greenhouse is open select days of the week including the following posted hours: Monday through Wednesday (hours vary), Thursday 9:00am-12:00pm, Friday 2:00-6:00pm, and Saturday and Sunday 10:00am-4:00pm. Kayla says that if the big door is open outside of regular business hours, anyone is welcome to stop in.
